Soul-Warming Hot Spiced Apple Drink | Festive Recipes

When we used to have the coffee shop in Glasgow city centre, this hot spiced apple drink was one of our biggest sellers during Winter. We would have vats of it simmering away all day long in our soup urns and the scent of apple and cinnamon went right out into the cold street, luring people in. It really doesn’t get much more festive than this. Taking a sip of this not only warms your body but it seems to warm your soul, giving that ‘warm fuzzy’ feeling. There’s nothing quite like it.

We originally came up with it because we wanted to serve mulled wine but were initially unsure of the licensing regulations as wine is alcoholic and we weren’t a licensed premises. But once we tried this out we never even bothered with the mulled wine! If you wanted a more grown up version you could make this with apple cider instead of apple juice, either way is delicious!

It’s so quick and easy to make, the chai tea bags allow for a much faster and cheaper way to do it, but you can add all the individual spices to your taste if you prefer.

Also you can strain the apple chunks out if you like, but I think there’s nothing better than getting a big soggy bite of soft, spicy apple at the end of your drink! It’s all down to personal taste.

Hot Spiced Apple Drink
  1. 500ml Apple Juice
  2. 2 Apples
  3. 2 chai tea bags
  4. 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  5. 5 tbsp Maple Syrup
  1. Cut the apples into small chunks and put into a large saucepan along with the apple juice and chai tea bags.
  2. Leave on a medium/high heat for 20 minutes, but do not allow to boil.
  3. Stir in the cinnamon and maple syrup and leave for a further 10 minutes.
  4. Serve (with apple chunks) or leave in saucepan over a low heat until ready to drink (the longer you leave it the better it tastes!)
